Water Usage and Conservation
I’ve just updated the water usage numbers on our website. You can see how many gallons/day on average that you have used for every month this year up through August. To see the data, go to https://irishhillswater.org/water-usage and click on the link that says "Click here to view Water Usage Tables for members of the IHMWC.” If you need the password, please send email to info@irishhillswater.org.
Looking at these numbers can give you a good idea of how your water usage compares to other customers in your neighborhood, and to alert you to any possible water leaks on your property.
There are many factors that affect water usage; the biggest one by far is landscaping. We encourage everyone to plant water-efficient plants and trees, especially California natives. If your home is part of an HOA, you may have additional restrictions on what you can plant and what types of irrigation system you can use, so please check before doing major landscape projects.
The other big usage of water is water leaks, especially broken irrigation lines that are underground. In that case you may not even know that you’re using water! If your water usage seems high, we encourage you to hire a licensed plumber to evaluate your system and suggest ways to improve your water conservation, but there are some things you can do yourself. Our water comes from the ground directly below our houses. We have six wells that draw that water out of the ground, pump it up to the highest point in our area, filter and chlorinate it and store it in large tanks before it heads back down the hill to your home and to the fire hydrants in your neighborhood. We all need to use water responsibly, because we are all sharing the same resource and in California this can be a precious limited one.
